1. General Information on Host Country and Host City

The 2012 World Fencing Championships will take place from 13 to 14 April in Kyiv, Ukraine.

Currency Hrivnya (Grivna) is the Ukrainian national currency (UAH), based on the decimal system; there are one hundred Copecks to each Hrivnya (UAH). Coins are issued to the value of 1 c, 2 c, 5 c, 10 c, 25 c, 50 c and 1 UAH. Notes are issued to the value of 1 UAH, 2 UAH, 5 UAH, 10 UAH , 20 UAH 50 UAH, 100 UAH, 200 UAH and 500 UAH. Money can be changed at any bank and at most of the hotel reception desks (1 EUR is app. 11 UAH).

3. Arrivals and Departures

3.1. Arrival in Kyiv and Departure

Transportation from Borispil Airport and main train stations (on specific request) to the official media hotel (and vice versa) will be organised for all media representatives having booked their accommodation and transportation through the World Fencing Championships official web-page:

3.2. Visa Requirements

Please check on the visa requirements to enter Ukraine in the Ukrainian Embassy in your country or at the web-site of Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. (http://www.mfa.gov.ua/mfa/en/publication/content/1865.html)

All media representatives that follow the procedure but face problems to obtain a visa, may contact the Local Organising Committee (Mr.Rustam Mamedov ) to obtain a special invitation letter by sending an e-mail to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Please be aware that visa applications might require some working days to be processed.

4. Accommodation and Transportation

Media representatives can book their accommodation through the World Fencing Championships official web-page and take benefit of the special rates and transportation services provided.

5. Accreditation

5.1. General Information

Each journalist will receive an accreditation card, which must be worn at all times and should be clearly visible.

Security personnel will control all areas. The accreditation is not transferable and does not allow the holder to take another person beyond checkpoints. Photos will be required for the accreditation card system.

Photographs shall be uploaded online through the online registration system; otherwise a picture will have to be taken on the day of card collection in Kyiv.

5.2. Accreditation Centre

The accreditation centre for the media is located directly at the competition venue. Opening hours are planned as follows: 8.00 am until 7.00 pm

5.3. Loss of Accreditation

Any lost or damaged accreditation cards should be reported to the accreditation centre. Duplicate cards can be obtained where proof of identity can be established.

Unauthorized use of an accreditation card will result in the card being confiscated.

6. Media Services

6.1. General Information

The 2012 World Fencing Championships will be held in the Palace of Sport The address of the venue is as follows: 1, Sportyvna Ploshcha, Kyiv, 01601. The venue is by car about 40 minutes from the Airport, located in the city center, a 5 minutes’ walk away from Hotel "Rus".

6.2. Media Areas

All media facilities are in the competition venue.

6.2.1. Press Work Room

The press work room is situated near the press tribune and standard equipped with work tables, electric plugs, internet, lockers, etc.

6.2.2. Mixed Zone

A mixed zone will be located at the point of exit for the athletes upon completion of their event. TV and radio rights holders will have the opportunity to be the first to speak to the athletes, followed by ENG Crews, Agency and Written Press and Non-Rights holders.

6.2.3. Media Tribune

The media tribune is divided into sections for TV/radio broadcasters and written press. The media tribune will be fully equipped with working tables, internet, lockers and a TV screen.

13-14 April The press room will open 30 minutes before the start of the competitions and close three hours after the last bout.

6.2.4. Catering

Snacks and refreshments will be available in the media area. There are several restaurants around the venue and a public caterer in the competition venue.

6.3. Opening Press Conference

There will be an official opening press conference. Registered media will be informed in due time about the date, place and timing of the press conference.

6.4. Official Interviews

The post event press conference room is located on the 3rd floor in the Venue. All interviews will mainly be carried out in English. There are no automatic press conferences planned after each final. However, in the event of a noteworthy performance and/or a request from the media, a press conference will be held.

6.5. Media Information

6.6. Results

Every day, starting lists, draws and results will be available at the media info center very close to the press room.

7. Photographers

Photographers will have their working place in the Media tribune. Lockers will be set up where photographers can leave their equipment.

Number of pool photographers: max 7 Photographers vests will be distributed.

7.1. Photographer Briefing

Photographer Briefing will be held on Thursday, 12 April in the press conference room (located on the 3rd floor in the venue). Registered photographers will be informed in due time on the exact time.

8. Competition

There will be one women’s event and one men’s event:

  • Women’s sabre team
  • Men’s epee team

In team events, all FIE member federations may enter a team. A team consists of three fencers, with or without a reserve. The three fencers of one team fence the three fencers of the opposing team in 9 relay bouts. The competition format is a direct elimination table.

9. Ceremonies

9.1. Opening Ceremony

The Opening Ceremony will take place on Friday 13 April on the venue. The exact time will be announced as soon as possible. It will be a ceremony with a flags parade and official speeches.

9.2. Victory Ceremonies

Victory ceremonies will take place at the competition venue after the finals.

9.3. Closing Ceremony

A short closing ceremony is planned between third medal fight and final on Saturday 14 April.
